What is an AI prompt?
A prompt is the task and context you give an AI tool. A useful prompt goes beyond assigning a role: it explains what to do, which input to use, how to format the result and how to handle uncertainty.
A reusable prompt template
Task: What result do I need? Context: Who is it for, and how will it be used? Input: What information will I supply? Output: A list, table or short text? Constraints: What must not be guessed, and what needs checking?
Three common mistakes
Giving an overly broad task, omitting necessary input and using the response without checking it. Instead of “make a plan”, state the goal, time frame and available resources. Ask the model to flag missing information. An illustrative output is not evidence of a real event.
